Overview

The Bioinformatics Unit is a team dedicated to support and perform research at CRAG, offering services ranging from experimental to software design. The unit is currently organized in two functional areas, namely Scientific IT and Molecular Data Analysis.

Scientific IT Area

A self-service bioinformatics computing cluster is maintained and available to the CRAG research community, and support is provided for software development of tools and data management.

Molecular Data Analysis Area

Its role is to help CRAG researchers to apply computational methods to the understanding of novel biological questions. To that end, it offers the following services:

• Consultancy: from grant writing and experimental design, to data analysis, data visualization and statistical and mathematical modelling.
• Support: developing ad hoc data analysis workflows on demand, using biostatistics, systems biology, bioinformatics, sequence analysis and metabolic modelling.
• Training: as part of CRAG’s internal training programme, it offers a wide range of quantitative biology courses, with a focus in developing basic fundamental skills such as programming, or in advanced topics such as network analysis and data visualization.
• Collaboration & research: collaborating with CRAG’s researchers to develop state of the art computational approaches to characterise molecular mechanisms.
• Bi-weekly informal discussions: it hosts a whiteboard discussion club with a focus on open problem analysis, experimental design and data visualization. All questions and levels are welcome, providing an environment that fosters problem-solving and internal networking.
