Title TEANS-PB. Temperature and antibiotics stress: effects on phage-bacteria interactions in the gut microbiota of Blattella germanica.
Description

The project focuses on the study of interactions between bacteriophages and bacteria in the intestinal microbiota of the cockroach Blattella germanica. It is hypothesized that bacteriophages affect bacterial diversity and that host response to stress factors, such as antibiotics or temperature extremes, alters bacteriophage-bacteria interactions, influencing host metabolism.

The objectives of the project include characterizing the diversity and co-occurrence of bacteriophages and bacteria in experimental and natural cockroach populations, analyzing the interactions between them, and assessing the effects of these interactions on host physiology under environmental stress conditions. Techniques such as deep sequencing metagenomics and germ-free cockroach experiments will be used to monitor patterns of bacteriophage and bacterial co-occurrence, as well as to determine differential effects on host metabolism using RNA-Seq.

The ultimate goal is to better understand the dynamics of phage-bacteria interactions in the gut ecosystem of a cockroach species exposed to heat or antibiotic stress. This will help to expand knowledge on the role of complex microbial communities in eukaryotic organisms in the face of the effects of climate change and antibiotic resistance.
