Detalle de: THE NEUROPEPTIDE CORTISTATIN REGULATES THE PROGRAMMING OF BRAIN ENDOTHELIAL CELLS UNDER PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Title THE NEUROPEPTIDE CORTISTATIN REGULATES THE PROGRAMMING OF BRAIN ENDOTHELIAL CELLS UNDER PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
Abstract

The critical brain activity governing cognition, behaviour, and coordination of the peripheral organs requires a fine-tuned microenvironment based on the regulated influx and efflux of ions, oxygen and nutrients to and from the brain compartments, and a restricted invasion of toxins and pathogens. For this, a tightly controlled blood-brain barrier (BBB) is essential as its breakdown and subsequent disturbance of brain function is involved in a variety of central nervous system diseases. Endothelial cells from brain microvasculature are the main responsible of sustaining BBB formation and stability but also may be a cause or consequence of BBB dysfunction.
