Biography

I am a Computer Engineer by training, having graduated from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). Following a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, I earned a Ph.D. in Synthetic Biology from UPM in 2010.

I then relocated to the United Kingdom, where I worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the Novel Computation Group at Manchester Metropolitan University under the guidance of Martyn Amos. Upon completing this position in 2013, I returned to Madrid and joined Victor de Lorenzo's Lab within the Systems Biology Program at CNB-CSIC (National Center for Biotechnology).

In 2016, I embarked on a new chapter at Newcastle University (UK), taking on the role of Principal Investigator in Synthetic Biology within the ICOS group at the School of Computing. During this time, I was honored with the prestigious EPSRC First Grant. After four years, in 2020, I returned to Madrid to establish the Biocomputation Lab at the Centre for Biotechnology and Plant Genomics (CBGP, UPM-CSIC). In 2024 I joined the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB), a centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Notably, my research contributions have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Margarita Salas Research Award in 2022 and the Medal of the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering in 2023. Additionally, my work is supported by an ERC Consolidator Grant (2022) focusing on the evolutionary programming of living systems.
