Biography

Paulino Gómez-Puertas (Santa María del Páramo, León, Spain, 1965) is a Research Scientist (Científico Titular) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CSIC-UAM), and Associated Researcher of the Institute for Health Research of La Paz University Hospital (IdiPAZ). His group studies macromolecular complexes of biomedical interest by molecular dynamics simulation and develops efficient structure-based drug design methods based on computational dynamic simulation of macromolecular structures.

Academic degrees. B.Sc. in Biological Sciences (1986), M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1988) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1992), all at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Career. Undergraduate (1983) and PhD student (1989) at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Postdoctoral researcher at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CSIC, 1992), the Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal (CISA-INIA, 1993) and the Centro Nacional de Biología Fundamental (ISCIII, 1997); visiting scientist at the N.E.R.C. Institute of Virology and Environmental Microbiology, Oxford (1998); postdoctoral researcher in the Protein Design Group of the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CSIC, 2000). Research Scientist of CSIC since 2002, at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa since 2004, and Honorary Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2003-2008). In 2006 he coordinated the Bioinformatics modules of the UAM Master's programmes in Molecular Biology and in Biomedicine. Associated Researcher at IdiPAZ since 2012, and member of the CSIC networks "Conexión Cáncer" (since 2021), "Computational Biology and Bioinformatics" (since 2023) and the Rare Diseases Network RER-CSIC (since 2024).

Awards and scientific societies. Doctorate Prize of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1992); "Juan Abelló" Biochemistry Award of the Spanish Royal Academy of Doctors (1994). Member of the Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM, since 1992) and of the Spanish Association of Human Genetics (AEGH, since 2013).

Journals. Associate editor of the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (since 2026); academic editor of the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (2024-2025), the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, sections Molecular Biology and Molecular Biophysics (2018-2025), and Biophysica (2022-2025). Referee for international journals in bioinformatics and molecular biology.

Project evaluation. Evaluator of project proposals for the Spanish National Evaluation and Foresight Agency (ANEP), the Agency for Administration of University and Research Grants of Catalonia, the Research, Development and Innovation office of Galicia, the Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (ANPCyT, Argentina), the Comisión Sectorial de Investigación Científica (CSIC-Uruguay), the National Evaluation and Foresight Commission (FONCECYT-CONICYT, Chile) and the University of Macau.

Science policy and committees. Member of the Informatics Commission (2006) and of the Bioinformatics Commission (2023) of the CBM; participant in the CSIC "Science4Policy" initiative with the report "Bacterial resistance to antibiotics" (2023).

Technology transfer. In 2007 he founded Biomol-Informatics SL, a spin-off company of the Madrid Science Park, which participated in the EU FP7 consortia DIVINOCELL (2009), DORIAN (2012) and Epi-TRAITS (Marie Curie ITN, 2012), in the IMI-ENABLE consortium of the Innovative Medicines Initiative New Drugs for Bad Bugs programme (2014), and coordinated the DIGEN-1K consortium (Madrid Science Park, IdiPAZ, CSIC; Plan Nacional I+D+I 2011). R&D contract in bioinformatics between Biomol-Informatics SL and the Fundación Severo Ochoa (2008-2017). Co-inventor of the patent "Soluble miniACE2 proteins that interact with SARS-CoV-2 and uses thereof" (PCT/IB2023/054335, WO/2023/209619), in collaboration with the Instituto Distrital de Ciencia, Biotecnología e Innovación en Salud (IDCBIS) of Bogotá, Colombia.

Publication metrics (May 2026). Web of Science h-index 46; Scopus h-index 44; Research.com D-index 52; ResearchGate h-index 50; Google Scholar i10-index 114. Ranked #15475 worldwide and #371 in Spain among the best Biology and Biochemistry scientists by Research.com (2026).
