Title Systems Biology Modeling
Description

[EN]

Our goal is to understand the mechanisms behind diseases, with the final aim of incorporating the use of personalised digital twins in biomedical and biotechnological projects. For this, we combine multi-omics clinical data analytics, such as single-cell and spatial omics, modelling cellular behaviours and High-Performance Computing using multiscale models.

Despite recent advances, further work needs to be done to have complex real-size simulations of biological tissues that mimic, for instance, a realistic cancer response to different chemo- and immune therapies. This model would enable the study of the influence of the tumour shape and its interactions with the environment, becoming a patient-specific digital twin of a given tumour that is an alternative to expensive clinical trials. More importantly, the methodologies developed for this digital twin would boost other biotechnological projects.

Our research plan is to scale up the scope of biomedical and biotechnological projects by taking advantage of multiscale modelling and complementary techniques. Currently, the lab works on three principal axes: modelling patient-specific differential response to drugs using spatial and single-cell omics data, using spatial omics images to have complex heterogeneous simulations set-ups, and including evolutionary mechanisms in the cells’ dynamics and their interactions.
