Biography

I am a computational ecologist and evolutionary biologist specializing in the microbial world, with expertise in molecular biology, multiomics and bioinformatics. I completed my PhD at Lund University (Sweden), and then pursued postdoctoral research at Uppsala University (Sweden) and the Institute of Marine Sciences in Barcelona. After a Ramón y Cajal tenure-track grant, I moved into a permanent position at the ICM-CSIC in 2019. I lead the LOG-Lab, which I established in 2015.

Our research focuses on understanding the structuring, evolution and dynamics of natural microbial communities and populations, disentangling the network of microbial interactions in ecosystems, and linking the gene content of genomes, communities and their variation with ecological function and evolutionary processes.

Since 2006 I have authored more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters, and I have been PI of 12 projects. Since 2010 I have taught postgraduate bioinformatics courses at the University of Oslo. I was instrumental in establishing the Marbits eco-informatics platform at the ICM-CSIC, which I now coordinate. I am ambassador for Spain at the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) and associate editor of The ISME Journal.
