Biography

Carmen Gil is a medicinal chemist with a PhD from Complutense University of Madrid and postdoctoral training at Bonn University. Since joining CSIC and becoming a Tenure Scientist, she has built a strong research career focused on the design of biologically active molecules for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly targeting phosphodiesterases (PDEs) and protein kinases involved in central nervous system disorders.
Her research has progressively expanded into infectious diseases, where she develops new therapeutics using both target-based and phenotypic drug discovery approaches, addressing urgent global challenges such as neglected tropical diseases and emerging viral threats. She has coordinated international consortia, including a La Caixa–supported program on antiviral development against highly pathogenic viruses such as Ebola, with expertise that contributed to rapid responses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her overarching scientific mission is the development of innovative therapies for diseases with unmet medical needs, supported by a multidisciplinary background and strong international collaborations that enable effective target validation and drug development.
In addition to her academic work, she is strongly committed to technology transfer and scientific entrepreneurship, having co-founded Ankar Pharma (2014) and Molefy Pharma (2024) as CSIC spin-offs. Molefy Pharma is currently advancing AP-2, an innovative therapeutic candidate for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which has received approval to enter Phase I clinical trials.
